Best Mattress Topper Australia 2026: Foam, Latex & Wool Picks

We read Bedbuyer’s Australian topper rankings, CHOICE’s buying guide and thousands of ProductReview owner ratings, checked trials and return policies, and sorted out which mattress toppers are worth your money — and when you need a new mattress instead.

By Kevin, writer & researcher16 min read🔬 Research-based, not sponsored

The short verdict

The best mattress topper in Australia for most people is the Ecosa Plush Mattress Topper. It is 5cm of gel-infused memory foam with a washable TENCEL cover, costs A$368 for a queen according to Bedbuyer’s October 2026 rankings, and has the strongest owner record of any Australian topper we could check: 4.8 out of 5 from 249 reviews on ProductReview, with 97% positive. Bedbuyer’s one caution is that it’s denser and more supportive than most toppers, so don’t expect a cloud.

If you want to spend less, the Zeek Top Notch (A$269, 5cm) is Bedbuyer’s number-one pick. If you want a trial you can count on, the Newentor (A$287, 7cm, two-sided) carries 120 nights and a 10-year warranty. If you want natural latex, the Peace Lily starts at A$569. And if you’re standing in an IKEA, the NORDBERGET memory foam pad is A$299 for a queen and covered by IKEA’s 365-day mattress pad exchange.

CHOICE topper buying guide

One thing every serious guide agrees on, including Bedbuyer: a topper can’t fix a badly sagging or worn-out mattress. It drapes into the dip. Toppers fix a bed that is the wrong feel — too firm, slightly too soft but still flat, or too warm. If your bed has a trench in it or is past Sleep Foundation’s six-to-eight-year mark, jump to topper vs new mattress before spending A$300 on foam.

Best mattress toppers in Australia at a glance

Eight toppers made our list. Seven come from Bedbuyer’s Australian rankings and one, the Emma, from ProductReview’s topper category, and every one is sold in Australian sizes with Australian delivery. American favourites like the Saatva and Tempur toppers covered in our US mattress topper guide either don’t ship here or cost far more once imported, so we’ve left them out.

Prices are queen RRPs as listed by Bedbuyer in October 2026. Australian topper prices move almost weekly, and most of these brands run sales around Black Friday and the end of financial year, so check the live price before you buy. Where we couldn’t read a spec on a page we actually opened, the table says “not stated” or “not verified” rather than guessing.

How we picked (and what we couldn’t check)

We don’t test toppers in a lab and we haven’t slept on these. What we did is read the Australian sources that actually cover toppers. Bedbuyer publishes a ranked list of Australian mattress toppers with specs, prices and trial terms, last updated 8 October 2026. CHOICE publishes a topper buying guide with AUD price ranges by material and a typical lifespan. And ProductReview.com.au holds the largest pool of Australian owner ratings, with 6,805 reviews across its topper category. We cross-checked each pick against at least two of those where we could.

We ranked on four things. Owner evidence: a 4.8 average from 249 reviews tells you more than a 5.0 from a handful. Fit to a problem: each pick has a job — softening, firming, cooling, value. Terms: a topper you can’t return is a gamble, so trials and warranties counted. And materials: memory foam, latex and fibre wear out at different rates and suit different sleepers.

Some honest gaps. CHOICE’s topper guide gives buying advice but, on the page we read, no test scores or brand recommendations, so there are no CHOICE ratings here. Tom’s Guide’s Australian topper page wouldn’t load for us, and the Ecosa, Koala, Kmart and Target product pages blocked our fetches. That means we couldn’t confirm Ecosa’s topper trial length, Koala’s standalone topper specs, or any Kmart or Target topper price. Where that matters, we tell you exactly what to check before you buy.

Best mattress topper overall: Ecosa Plush

#1 · Best overall

Ecosa Plush Mattress Topper

Material
G-7 gel memory foam, pincore ventilation, washable TENCEL cover
Thickness
5cm
Price
A$368 queen
Terms
10-year warranty · trial not stated by Bedbuyer
Sold at
ecosa.com.au

Why: Best owner record of any AU topper we checked: 4.8 from 249 ProductReview reviews (97% positive). Bedbuyer found it denser and more supportive than most.

Skip if: You want a cloud-soft feel — look at Ecosa’s Ultra Plush or the Zeek Whopper.

Check price at Ecosa Evidence: Bedbuyer, ProductReview.com.au

The Ecosa Plush wins on evidence. Bedbuyer ranks it eighth on its list mainly because it’s firmer than the others, but no other topper we found comes close on owner feedback: 4.8 from 249 ProductReview reviews and 97% positive. Owners most often say it softens a firm mattress and eases hip, joint and back pain, that it stays put, and that the cover zips off for washing. Several also praise Ecosa’s customer service, including a replacement after a zip broke.

The construction is sensible. It’s 5cm of what Ecosa calls G-7 gel-infused memory foam, with pincore ventilation holes to reduce heat build-up, under a removable TENCEL cover with recycled content. Adjustable elastic straps and a grippy underside hold it in place, the foam is CertiPUR-US certified, and Bedbuyer lists a 10-year warranty.

Why it beats softer toppers for most people: a dense 5cm layer adds shoulder and hip cushioning without making you sink so far that your spine bends. That’s the right correction for a bed that’s a notch too firm, which is the most common reason Australians buy a topper. It’s also why we’d pick it for back pain.

The trade-offs come straight from owners. Some say it shifts and needs straightening in the morning, a few found it warm, and the extra depth stopped some standard bedcovers fitting — buy deeper fitted sheets (our Australian mattress sizes guide explains pocket depth). A few owners with very firm mattresses found it not soft enough. If that’s you, Ecosa’s Ultra Plush topper scores 4.9 from 141 ProductReview reviews and is described by an owner as about 8cm thick, though many of those reviews are marked as incentivised. Ecosa’s Firm topper (4.8 from 65) is the version for firming up an older soft bed.

Best memory foam mattress toppers

Memory foam is the most popular topper material in Australia and the most effective way to add slow, contouring pressure relief. CHOICE puts a queen memory foam topper at A$200–500, rising with thickness and added infusions, and warns it can be hot and leave you feeling you’re sinking in too much. Five of our eight picks are foam.

#2 · Best value memory foam

Zeek Top Notch Topper

Material
Gel-infused memory foam, removable bamboo cover
Thickness
5cm
Price
A$269 queen
Terms
Trial and warranty not stated by Bedbuyer
Sold at
zeek.com.au

Why: Bedbuyer’s #1 topper: corner straps, a hand-washable cover and good motion absorption for about A$100 less than the Ecosa.

Skip if: You need a confirmed trial before buying — check Zeek’s terms first.

Check price at Zeek Evidence: Bedbuyer

Zeek Top Notch is Bedbuyer’s top-ranked Australian topper and our value pick. It’s 5cm of gel-infused memory foam with a removable, hand-washable bamboo cover and corner straps, and Bedbuyer notes it absorbs movement well, which helps couples. At A$269 it costs about A$100 less than the Ecosa. What we couldn’t confirm is the trial: Bedbuyer doesn’t list one, so check Zeek’s terms before buying.

#3 · Best two-sided / firm option

Newentor Mattress Topper

Material
Gel-visco memory foam (soft side) + high-resilience foam (firm side)
Thickness
7cm or 10cm
Price
A$287 queen (7cm)
Terms
120-night trial · 10-year warranty
Sold at
newentor.com.au

Why: The longest trial on Bedbuyer’s list, two feels in one, a machine-washable OEKO-TEX cover and CertiPUR-US foam. ProductReview owners give it 4.4.

Skip if: You want natural materials or a single, consistent feel.

Check price at Newentor Evidence: Bedbuyer, ProductReview.com.au

Newentor is the topper we’d buy if we weren’t sure what feel we wanted. It’s two-sided: a softer gel-visco memory foam side and a firmer high-resilience foam side, in 7cm or 10cm. That makes it the most flexible foam pick here, and the 120-night trial is the longest on Bedbuyer’s list. The cover is machine-washable and OEKO-TEX certified, the foam CertiPUR-US, and there’s a non-slip base with straps. ProductReview owners give it 4.4 — good, though a step behind the Ecosa.

Longest warranty

Valmori Gel Foam Topper

Material
Gel memory foam with airflow channels, bamboo-rayon cover
Thickness
7cm
Price
A$280 queen
Terms
100-night trial · 15-year warranty
Sold at
vhc-sleep.com.au

Why: A thicker, supportive foam topper with a trial and the longest warranty we found. OEKO-TEX and CertiPUR-US certified.

Skip if: You dislike a dense, ‘slightly spongy’ feel (Bedbuyer’s words).

Valmori Gel Foam (sold through VHC Sleep) is a 7cm gel memory foam topper with ventilated airflow channels and a washable bamboo-rayon cover. It earns its place on terms: a 100-night trial and a 15-year warranty, the longest we found. Bedbuyer describes the feel as dense and slightly spongy, which suits people who want support from a thicker topper rather than sink.

Check price at Emma Evidence: ProductReview.com.au

Emma Flip Topper has the biggest owner sample in Australia: 4.6 from 1,036 ProductReview reviews, 90% positive. Owners say it’s reversible, with a soft-medium side and a medium-firm side, and that it rescued old or uncomfortable mattresses. The recurring complaint is the opposite of what you’d expect: several buyers who wanted soft found both sides too firm and too similar. Some also report slow support on returns. We couldn’t open Emma’s Australian product page, so we can’t give a verified price, thickness or trial; owners mention buying in 40%-off sales.

Best latex mattress topper

Latex is the topper material to buy if you want it to last. It’s springier than memory foam, so you move on it rather than sink into it, and it breathes better. CHOICE says latex suits heavier people and generally costs about A$500 for a queen, with a range from A$300 all the way to A$2,500. Tom’s Guide estimates latex toppers last five to fifteen years, against two to five for memory foam.

#4 · Best latex topper

peacelily.com.au

Why: The only natural latex pick on Bedbuyer’s list, in Luxury Plush or Firm. Latex is springier, more breathable and longer-lasting than foam. ProductReview: 4.7.

Skip if: You want memory-foam hug, or a topper under A$300.

Check price at Peace Lily Evidence: Bedbuyer, ProductReview.com.au

Peace Lily is the only natural latex topper on Bedbuyer’s Australian list, and our pick. It’s 100% natural Dunlop latex under an organic-cotton cover, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 certified, in two feels: Luxury Plush and Firm. Bedbuyer says the Firm suits those wanting more support. It starts at A$569, includes free shipping, a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty, and ProductReview owners rate it 4.7.

Who should pay the extra? Three groups. Heavier sleepers, because latex resists bottoming out better than soft foam, as CHOICE notes. Hot sleepers, because latex is more breathable. And anyone keeping a good mattress for years, because the long life brings the yearly cost down — see the cost-per-year chart below.

Who shouldn’t: anyone who wants the slow, hugging sink of memory foam, or anyone on a tight budget. Bedbuyer flags the price as the highest on its list. Another latex option, Latex Mattress Australia’s topper, scores 4.9 on ProductReview, but we couldn’t open its specs, so it’s a lead to check rather than a pick.

Wool mattress toppers and Australian wool brands

Wool gets a lot of searches in Australia, and for good reason: it’s breathable, mildew-resistant and warm in winter without trapping heat in summer. CHOICE puts a queen wool topper at A$250–500. But CHOICE is also clear on the trade-off: wool is less supportive than other types. A wool topper is really a luxurious underlay. It adds warmth and a soft surface; it doesn’t correct pressure points the way foam or latex does.

We looked hard for an Australian wool topper with enough independent evidence to recommend, and didn’t find one. MiniJumbuk, the best-known local wool brand, sells a Sleep Therapy Mattress Topper from A$499.99, and its range filters for Australian wool fleece and wool-and-cotton fills. But its ProductReview listing has just six reviews averaging 3.3, and owners describe it as cotton on one side and wool on the other, roughly 30–40mm thick, with one reporting sagging in the middle after three weeks and another a refused in-store return. Bedbuyer’s list doesn’t cover wool at all.

Our advice: buy wool for warmth and moisture control, not for pain relief. If you want both, put a wool underlay on top of a foam or latex topper — the wool handles temperature, the foam handles pressure. And check the return terms carefully, because wool bedding is often sold under the “non-refundable unless faulty” policies CHOICE warns about.

Memory foam, latex, wool or fibre: what each costs

The chart below lays out what CHOICE says each material costs for a queen. The cheapest, polyester fibre, starts at A$70 and is often machine-washable and hypoallergenic, but CHOICE says it doesn’t breathe well and has a shorter lifespan. Feather and down sleeps cool and light but needs regular shaking and isn’t hypoallergenic. Latex has by far the widest range.

Thickness matters as much as material. CHOICE defines a topper as an extra layer of about 2 to 10cm, which is what separates it from a flat mattress pad. Bedbuyer says quality toppers are usually between 5cm and 8cm, and that thicker toppers make a more noticeable change. In practice: 5cm for a gentle correction, 7–10cm for a big change or for side sleepers on a firm bed.

Best mattress topper for back pain

For back pain, aim for medium-firm, not soft. The best-known trial, Kovacs and colleagues in The Lancet (2003), found people with chronic low-back pain did better on medium-firm mattresses than firm ones. The same logic applies to toppers: enough cushioning to let shoulders and hips sink slightly, enough support to keep the spine level. A thick, very soft topper does the opposite for back and stomach sleepers, letting the hips drop.

Our pick for back pain is the Ecosa Plush (reviewed above). It’s the dense, supportive one, and back, hip and joint relief is the most common theme in its 249 ProductReview reviews. If your mattress has gone a bit soft and you want to firm it, the Ecosa Firm topper is the better match: owners say it helped firm up older, soft mattresses and eased morning back pain, although one found it made only a minor difference. The Newentor on its firm high-resilience side is the alternative with a 120-night trial.

Be honest about the cause, though. If your back pain started as your mattress aged, the mattress is the likelier culprit, and a topper on a worn-out bed treats the symptom for a few months. Our best mattress for back pain guide explains what to look for, and the best mattress Australia rankings name the local beds that fit. If pain is severe or persistent, see a GP or physio.

Best mattress topper for side sleepers

Side sleepers get the most out of toppers. Lying on your side concentrates weight on the shoulder and hip, and a firm mattress pushes back hard at exactly those points. A thicker layer of soft memory foam is the classic fix, which is why the thickest foam toppers on Bedbuyer’s list are the side-sleeper picks.

#5 · Best for side sleepers

Material

Price
A$359 queen

Sold at
zeek.com.au

Why: One of the thickest toppers on Bedbuyer’s list and the one it names for side sleepers; non-slip base and adjustable straps.

Skip if: You sleep on your stomach or run hot — thick soft foam can sleep warmer.

Check price at Zeek Evidence: Bedbuyer

Our pick for side sleepers is the Zeek Whopper: 7.5cm of gel-infused memory foam, one of the thickest toppers on Bedbuyer’s list and the one it names for side sleepers. Bedbuyer describes a balanced feel that isn’t overly heavy, with a non-slip base, adjustable straps and a removable bamboo cover. At A$359 it’s close to the Ecosa’s price, but where the Ecosa is dense, the Whopper is built to cushion.

The runners-up: the Newentor 10cm on its soft gel-visco side, if you want a trial, and the Ecosa Ultra Plush, which owners praise for softening firm mattresses and relieving hips and shoulders. Heavier side sleepers should go thicker rather than softer — a thin, soft topper can “bottom out”, letting you sink through to the firm mattress. Our best mattress for side sleepers guide covers when a softer mattress is the real answer, and on a Koala that’s often the Koala Plus (see our Koala review).

Best cooling mattress topper

“Cooling” is the most over-used word in topper marketing. Bedbuyer’s view is that thick, soft toppers can sleep warmer, and that gel foams, ventilation, bamboo or TENCEL covers and latex can help. Owner reviews back that up: even the well-loved Ecosa Plush gets occasional “warm” comments despite its pincore holes, and one Emma Flip owner reported heat build-up.

Our pick for hot sleepers is the Peace Lily latex topper. Latex is the material CHOICE calls more breathable than memory foam, and natural Dunlop latex with an organic-cotton cover is about as breathable as toppers get. If latex is out of budget, choose a thinner foam topper with ventilation — the 5cm Ecosa Plush with pincore holes, or the Valmori with airflow channels — over a thick 7–10cm slab. IKEA’s NÄSTABERG is sold as a cooling memory foam pad at A$349 queen, but we found no independent tests of how cool it sleeps.

Two cheaper fixes to try first. Swap a plastic-backed protector for a breathable one (see our best mattress protector guide), and switch to cotton or linen sheets. And if your mattress is all-foam and you run hot every night, a hybrid with springs will do more than any topper — our best mattress for hot sleepers guide explains why.

Kmart, Target and IKEA mattress toppers: are cheap ones worth it?

Skip if: You want a machine-washable cover — Bedbuyer says spot or steam clean.

Check price at Onebed Evidence: Bedbuyer, ProductReview.com.au

Kmart and Target sell some of the cheapest toppers in Australia, and plenty of people search for them by name. We have to be straight with you: both retailers’ websites blocked our attempts to read their topper listings, so we can’t give you a verified price, thickness or material for any Kmart or Target topper, and we won’t guess. What we can tell you is what CHOICE says about the cheap end of the market: polyester fibre toppers start at A$70, are often hypoallergenic and machine-washable, but don’t breathe well and have a shorter life. If a budget topper is fibre rather than foam, expect a soft surface, not support.

IKEA is the big-box option we could verify. IKEA Australia files its toppers as mattress pads. The NORDBERGET memory foam pad is A$299 for a queen and the NÄSTABERG cooling memory foam pad is A$349; cheaper foam pads like NÄSFJÄLLET (A$129, double) and NOPAKTE (A$59.99, single) sit below them. We couldn’t confirm thicknesses. IKEA’s big advantage is its return policy: you can exchange a mattress or mattress pad once within 365 days, as long as it’s not dirty, marked or damaged, and unopened products can be returned for a full refund within 365 days.

Our budget pick is the Onebed Topper at A$226.80, the lowest price on Bedbuyer’s list. It’s 5cm of open-cell foam in five comfort zones under the shoulders, hips and lower back, with a non-slip underside instead of straps. Bedbuyer says it feels lighter and softer than many memory foam toppers, and ProductReview owners give it 4.5. The cover zips off but is spot or steam clean only. Our rule of thumb for cheap toppers: under about A$150, buy foam not fibre, put a protector over it, and treat it as a guest-room or stopgap fix rather than your nightly bed for years.

Koala, Ecosa and Sleeping Duck toppers

If you own, or are eyeing, one of Australia’s big mattress-in-a-box brands, here’s how their toppers fit in.

Ecosa has the strongest topper range of the three: Plush, Ultra Plush and Firm, all rated 4.8–4.9 by ProductReview owners. The Plush is our overall pick. If you own an Ecosa Pure and chose the wrong edition, a topper is a cheaper fix than a return — though the Pure’s 100-night trial makes swapping editions the better first move.

Koala sells a topper, but its site rate-limited our fetches, so we can’t give you verified specs or a price. What we can confirm is that the Koala Plus and Polar+ mattresses include a zip-off seasonal topper — Bedbuyer describes a 2cm layer on the Plus — so if you’re choosing between a Koala Mattress plus a separate topper and a Koala Plus, the Plus may be the neater answer. Our Koala review covers the full lineup.

Sleeping Duck doesn’t sell a standalone topper. Its Mach II mattress is built around the same idea: comfort layers you can swap. During the 100-night guarantee, Sleeping Duck does free foam swaps to soft or extra-firm after you’ve tried your starting firmness for 21 nights. If you own a Mach II that feels wrong, ask for a swap before buying a topper. Details are in our Sleeping Duck review.

Mattress topper trials and return policies in Australia

Returns matter more for toppers than most people realise. Once a foam topper is unrolled it won’t go back in its box, and CHOICE notes that some bedding retailers run “non-refundable unless faulty” policies, while the foam and latex specialists are the ones more likely to offer trials. Here’s what we could verify.

The pattern is clear: the online foam and latex specialists — Newentor, Peace Lily and Valmori — give you 100 to 120 nights. IKEA gives you a one-time exchange on a mattress pad within 365 days, or a 60-day home test for store credit on opened products, provided you keep the packaging. For Ecosa, Zeek and Onebed, Bedbuyer doesn’t state a trial, so read the brand’s terms before you pay. For Kmart and Target, check in store.

Three rules. Give any topper two to three weeks before judging it. Keep a protector on it from night one: CHOICE advises reading warranty conditions carefully, and IKEA’s exchange, for one, requires the pad to be not dirty, marked or damaged. And if a trial matters, buy direct from the brand rather than a marketplace seller.

Mattress topper vs new mattress: the Australian maths

A topper is the right buy when your mattress is sound but the wrong feel. It’s the wrong buy when the mattress is sagging or old. Work through the questions in order:

Then compare cost per year. CHOICE says the average topper lasts about three to five years; Sleep Foundation puts most mattresses at six to eight. Divide price by lifespan and the gap narrows fast.

Read the chart carefully. A A$368 Ecosa Plush over three to five years costs A$74–123 a year, which overlaps with an Origin Hybrid on sale at A$712 over six to eight years (A$89–119). So if your mattress is near the end of its life, a premium topper costs about the same per year as a new budget hybrid — and the new mattress fixes the support problem too. Latex is the exception: Peace Lily’s long life brings it to A$38–114 a year.

If the flowchart says new mattress, start with our best mattress Australia rankings: the Sleeping Duck Mach II is our overall pick, and the Origin Hybrid is the budget hybrid. If you can wait, our Black Friday mattress sales guide shows when Australian prices drop — toppers usually follow the same calendar.

Mattress topper Australia: FAQ

What is the best mattress topper in Australia?

For most people, the Ecosa Plush Mattress Topper: 5cm of gel memory foam with a washable TENCEL cover, A$368 for a queen per Bedbuyer, and 4.8 stars from 249 ProductReview reviews. For value, Bedbuyer’s top pick is the A$269 Zeek Top Notch; for latex, the Peace Lily from A$569.

Are Kmart mattress toppers any good?

We couldn’t verify Kmart’s current toppers because its site blocked our fetches. CHOICE’s general advice applies: cheap polyester fibre toppers start around A$70 and are washable, but don’t breathe well and don’t last as long. If you buy cheap, choose foam over fibre and treat it as a short-term fix.

How thick should a mattress topper be?

CHOICE defines toppers as about 2 to 10cm, and Bedbuyer says quality toppers are usually 5 to 8cm. Choose 5cm for a gentle correction, and 7 to 10cm if you are a side sleeper on a firm bed or want a big change in feel.

Is a memory foam or latex topper better?

Memory foam is better for deep pressure relief and costs A$200–500 for a queen (CHOICE). Latex is springier, more breathable, suits heavier people and lasts longer, but generally costs about A$500, with a range up to A$2,500.

Can a mattress topper fix a sagging mattress?

No. A topper follows the shape of the mattress underneath, so it sinks into the dip. Bedbuyer says a topper can’t fix a badly sagging or worn-out mattress. If your bed is sagging or older than six to eight years, replace it.

Are wool mattress toppers good?

Wool is breathable, mildew-resistant and warm, and CHOICE prices queen wool toppers at A$250–500. But CHOICE says wool is less supportive than other types, so buy it for temperature and softness, not pressure relief or back pain.

How long does a mattress topper last?

CHOICE says the average topper stays in good condition for about three to five years. Latex lasts longest — Tom’s Guide estimates five to fifteen years — while cheap fibre toppers wear out fastest.

Does Sleeping Duck sell a mattress topper?

No. Sleeping Duck’s Mach II has swappable comfort layers instead: during the 100-night guarantee you can get free foam swaps to soft or extra-firm after trying your starting firmness for 21 nights.
