Best Firm Mattress (2026): 7 Picks That Are Actually Firm

Half the beds sold as “firm” measure softer in the lab, and the best back-pain trial found medium-firm beat firm. We ranked firm mattresses by RTINGS’ measured stiffness and tester ratings — and are honest about who should buy one.

The short verdict: the best firm mattress

The best firm mattress for most people is the Saatva Latex Hybrid. It is one of only two beds in our database that RTINGS measured as firm in the lab (60 Pa/mm), even though Saatva sells it as medium-firm. It pairs that firm feel with a five-zone latex layer, the best longevity score we track (8.3), cooling of 8.6 and edge support of 9.1. A queen costs about $2,346.

If you want a classic hotel-style firm bed, the Saatva Classic in its Firm option (testers put it around 8) is the innerspring to buy. Hot sleepers should look at the Bear Elite Hybrid in Firm, which Sleep Foundation rated 8 out of 10. The Bear Pro Hybrid is the best firm hybrid around $1,300, the Bear Original is a firm foam bed for about $699, and the Saatva HD is the only bed here built for sleepers over 300 lb. The firmest bed RTINGS has measured in our database is the Zinus Green Tea at 69 Pa/mm, but it is a budget bed with real caveats.

Before you buy any of them, read the evidence section. A firm mattress is the right call for stomach sleepers and heavier back sleepers. For most people with lower-back pain, the best trial we have says medium-firm does better.

How firm is a firm mattress? What the lab measured

“Firm” is the most abused word in mattress marketing. There is no regulated definition, every brand uses its own 1-to-10 scale, and review sites disagree with each other by a point or more on the same bed. If you are shopping for a firm mattress specifically, that matters more than anything else on this page: the bed you think you are buying may not be the bed that arrives.

RTINGS is the one outlet we use that measures firmness with a machine rather than a tester’s impression. It compresses each mattress and reports stiffness in pascals per millimetre (Pa/mm) — higher numbers are firmer — then maps the result onto five categories from plush to firm. Here is every RTINGS reading we hold, firmest first.

Three things jump out. First, genuinely firm beds are rare. Of the ten beds RTINGS measured, only two cleared the firm threshold. Most popular boxed beds cluster in medium-firm, between about 50 and 58 Pa/mm, because that is what sells to the widest range of sleepers.

Second, labels drift in both directions. DreamCloud now labels its Classic Hybrid as firm, but RTINGS measured it at 39 Pa/mm — medium-plush, near the soft end of the ladder. Meanwhile the Saatva Latex Hybrid is sold as medium-firm and measured firm. If you bought on labels alone, you would get both of these wrong.

Third, tester scores conflict. RTINGS measured the Zinus Green Tea at 69 Pa/mm, the firmest reading we have, yet Tom’s Guide found it soft enough to suit side sleepers. Part of the explanation is body weight — a heavier tester sinks further into the same foam — and part is that foam varies between production runs. We treat a bed as firm when the lab reading and most independent testers agree.

For a full explanation of the 1-to-10 scale, the difference between firmness and support, and how to translate one brand’s numbers into another’s, see our mattress firmness guide. This page is about one end of that scale.

Firm vs medium-firm mattress: what the evidence actually says

Here is the inconvenient part for a page called “best firm mattress”: the best clinical trial on mattress firmness found that firm lost.

In 2003, Francisco Kovacs and colleagues published a randomised, double-blind trial in The Lancet. They took 313 adults with chronic, non-specific low-back pain and assigned them to either a firm mattress or a medium-firm one, without telling them which they had. Firmness was measured on the European H-scale, which runs from 1.0 (firmest) to 10.0 (softest). The firm beds rated H 2.3; the medium-firm beds rated H 5.6. After 90 days, the medium-firm group did better on every primary outcome.

The paper’s opening line is blunt: a firm mattress “is commonly believed to be beneficial for low-back pain, although evidence supporting this recommendation is lacking.” Its conclusion is equally plain — a medium-firm mattress improved pain and disability. One of the three results, pain on rising, narrowly missed statistical significance, but none of them pointed toward firm.

Later reviews didn’t overturn it. A 2015 systematic review by Radwan and colleagues in Sleep Health, covering 24 controlled trials, found that a medium-firm mattress — ideally one people could adjust themselves — was best for comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment. A 2021 review of 39 studies by Caggiari and colleagues reached the same medium-firm conclusion. Neither found good evidence that a hard, unyielding bed helps backs.

What the evidence does not say is that firm mattresses are bad for everyone. The Kovacs trial didn’t split its results by sleep position or body weight, and those are exactly the two things that decide whether firm makes sense. A 250-lb stomach sleeper and a 130-lb side sleeper both lying on an H 2.3 bed are having completely different experiences. The trials also tested study-supplied beds, not the retail models on this page, and translating H-scale numbers to RTINGS’ Pa/mm isn’t possible with precision.

Our honest reading: medium-firm is the right default; firm is a targeted choice. If you are buying firm because you heard it is “good for your back”, you are probably buying the wrong bed. If you are buying firm because you sleep on your stomach, weigh more than average, or have already tried medium-firm and sank too far, you are probably buying the right one.

Who should buy a firm mattress (and who shouldn’t)

Two variables decide it: how you lie and how much you weigh. Lighter bodies barely compress a mattress, so a firm bed feels like a board. Heavier bodies sink through comfort layers, so a bed that measures medium-firm feels medium. Position decides where your weight lands — on a broad chest and pelvis when you lie face-down, on a narrow shoulder and hip when you lie on your side.

Mattress Clarity publishes firmness ranges for every combination of the two, and they are the clearest numbers we have found. We have recoloured its table to answer one question: should you go firm?

Stomach sleepers are the clearest case. Face-down, the heavy pelvis sits in the middle of your body, and on a soft bed it sinks and arches the lower back. Average-weight stomach sleepers should target 7 to 8; heavier ones 8 or above. Our best mattress for stomach sleepers guide ranks beds on RTINGS’ dedicated stomach scores, and the Saatva Latex Hybrid wins there too.

Back sleepers can go firm if they are average or heavier, and prefer a flat feel. Mattress Clarity’s range tops out at 7.5 for average weights and 8 above 230 lb, so a firm-leaning medium-firm is usually the sweet spot. Lighter back sleepers will be happier around 6. See our best mattress for back sleepers guide if this is you.

Side sleepers should not buy a firm mattress at any weight in that table. Lying on your side puts your whole weight through the shoulder and hip, and a firm surface pushes back on both — the most common cause of numb arms and sore hips. Even heavier side sleepers top out at 7. Our best mattress for side sleepers guide covers the softer end.

Combination sleepers who spend part of the night on their side should stay around medium-firm. The exception is a heavier combination sleeper whose main position is back or stomach — they can go a step firmer. Couples with mismatched needs should let the person who needs the firmer bed set the floor and soften one side with a topper; our couples guide covers the trade-offs.

Best firm mattress for back pain

“Firm mattress for back pain” is one of the most searched phrases in this category, so it is worth being direct. If your lower back hurts and you sleep on your back or side, the evidence points you toward medium-firm, not firm. Our best mattress for back pain guide picks the Bear Elite Hybrid in Medium for that reason, and walks through the trials in more depth than we do here.

A firm mattress for back pain does make sense in three situations. You sleep on your stomach, where sinking hips arch the lower back and firm support is the fix. You weigh over about 230 lb, where a bed has to be firmer simply to perform like medium-firm under you. Or you have tried medium-firm and it isn’t working — a minority of people genuinely feel better on a firmer surface, and a fair trial on your own body outranks a study average.

If one of those describes you, the best firm mattress for back pain is the Saatva Latex Hybrid. It measured firm, its support sub-score is 7.7, and RTINGS scored it 7.6 for back sleepers and 7.7 for stomach sleepers. Crucially, its comfort layer is zoned latex rather than a hard slab, so it is firm underneath with a little give on top — the profile that a 2022 lab study by Hong and colleagues suggests is kindest to the spine. That study modelled people lying on soft, medium and hard foam: the hard bed concentrated pressure at the shoulder blades and buttocks and slightly flattened the lower-back curve, while the soft bed let the spine bend. Medium came out best.

Whatever you buy, give it three to four weeks before you judge it, and note your pain on rising each morning — the same measure the Kovacs trial used. If the pain is worse after a month on a firm bed, use the trial and go softer.

Firm mattress for heavy people

Heavier sleepers are the group most likely to be told they need a firm mattress, and for once the advice is mostly right. Above 230 lb, Mattress Clarity’s ranges shift up by about a point for back sleepers and two for stomach sleepers. A body that weighs more compresses comfort foam further and faster, so a bed has to start firmer to finish at the right depth.

But for heavy people, build matters more than the firmness number. All-foam firm beds such as the Bear Original and Zinus Green Tea are not designed for heavier bodies: Sleep Foundation flagged the Zinus for lacking edge support and durability for heavier sleepers, and the Bear Original’s own reviews flag it as a poor fit over 230 lb. What you want is a coil core, latex rather than soft memory foam, and an explicit weight rating.

That narrows it to two picks. From about 230 to 300 lb, the Saatva Latex Hybrid is the most durable firm bed we track. From 300 to 500 lb per side, the Saatva HD is purpose-built: heavy-gauge coils, zoned latex and a support sub-score of 8.3. Average-weight testers found it firm (7 to 8) precisely because it is tuned to feel medium-firm under a much heavier body. Our best mattress for heavy people guide goes deeper on weight ratings and foundations.

Best firm mattresses compared

How we picked: we started with every bed in our database that RTINGS measured as firm, or that at least two independent testers rated 7 or higher, or that offers a dedicated Firm option. We then ranked by support and durability — the two things that decide whether a firm bed stays firm — before cooling, edge support and price. The full method is on our how we rate page.

The table includes three beds we don’t recommend as firm mattresses, so you can see why: the Nectar Classic Hybrid and Puffy Royal measure medium-firm, and the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid is labeled firm but measured medium-plush.

6.5/10 · Medium-firm — Brand says Medium Firm (6), ‘best suited for back and stomach sleepers’; RTINGS measured Firm (60 Pa/mm).

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is the only premium bed in our database that a lab confirmed as firm. RTINGS measured 60 Pa/mm, a full category firmer than Saatva’s own medium-firm label, and that is the main reason it tops this list: you know what you are getting.

It is also the bed most likely to stay firm. Its RTINGS longevity score of 8.3 is the highest we track, and Sleep Foundation scored durability 9.5. Latex resists body impressions far better than memory foam, which matters because a firm bed that sags is no longer a firm bed. RTINGS gave it awards for best latex, best organic and best for seniors, scored it 7.6 for back sleepers and 7.7 for stomach sleepers, and measured cooling of 8.6 and edge support of 9.1.

The downsides are honest ones. Mattress Clarity scored it only 3.9 out of 5, mostly because it is firm for lighter people and offers limited contouring. There is one firmness, so you can’t fine-tune it. At about $2,346 for a queen it is expensive, and Saatva deducts $99 from returns. Skip it if you weigh under 130 lb or sleep mainly on your side. Everyone else shopping for a firm mattress should start here. See the full lineup in our Saatva review.

6.5/10 · Medium-firm — Luxury Firm (most popular). Also Plush Soft (Saatva’s label ~3; RTINGS measured 39 Pa/mm, medium-plush) and Firm (~8). RTINGS’ 43 Pa/mm Luxury Firm reading is from a double-pocket-coil unit; the official continuous-coil build tested medium-firm.

The Saatva Classic comes in three firmnesses, and only one of them belongs on this page. The scores on this card describe Luxury Firm, the most popular choice, which Sleepopolis measured at 7.5 but RTINGS scored only 6.7 for back sleepers and 6.5 for stomach sleepers. The Firm option, which testers put around 8, is the one to order if you want a genuinely firm, traditional coil-on-coil bed.

Why innerspring? Coils push back evenly, bounce well and sleep cool: Sleep Foundation gave the Classic 10 out of 10 for temperature control and 8.5 for edge support. Tom’s Guide ranks it first in its best mattress guide, and Forbes Vetted named it its top pick for back pain. Saatva delivers, sets it up and removes your old bed for free.

The weaknesses are motion isolation (Mattress Clarity 2.6 out of 5) and longevity — RTINGS rated it just 5.1 to 5.7 and found two coil designs sold under the same name. At about $1,895 it is cheaper than the Latex Hybrid, but the Latex Hybrid will hold its firmness longer. If you are weighing it against a cheaper boxed bed, read Saatva vs DreamCloud.

SoftMediumFirm

6/10 · Medium-firm — Medium tested (RTINGS Medium-Firm, 51 Pa/mm). Soft ≈5, Firm ≈7–8.

The Bear Elite Hybrid is sold in Soft, Medium and Firm, and Sleep Foundation rated them 5, 6 and 8. RTINGS tested the Medium and measured 51 Pa/mm — medium-firm — and named it the best medium-firm mattress for most people in 2026. The Firm version sits a clear step above that, which puts it in the 7-to-8 band that average-weight stomach and back sleepers want.

It earns its place through cooling and edges. Tom’s Guide named it the Best Cooling Mattress in its 2025 Sleep Awards, RTINGS measured cooling of 7.9, and its edge support score of 9.7 is the best in our database. Responsiveness is 9.4, so changing position is easy — useful on a firm bed, where you sit on top rather than in it.

The catch is durability: RTINGS rated longevity just 4.3 because of foam density, the weakest of our picks. On a firm bed, softening over time is the main thing that goes wrong, so register the warranty and rotate it. At about $1,599 it costs less than the Latex Hybrid. More in our Bear review.

7/10 · Firm — Testers 6.5–7. 2026 version is 13″ (older reviews tested 10″).

The Bear Pro Hybrid is the firm hybrid to buy if the Saatvas are out of budget. Testers rated it 6.5 to 7, and Sleep Foundation called it firm (7). It has good lumbar support (support 7.4), strong edges (8.0) and low motion transfer (7.6), which makes it a sensible pick for couples who both sleep on their backs.

Expert scores are solid rather than spectacular: 8.4 from Sleep Foundation, 4.4 out of 5 from Sleepopolis and 4.3 out of 5 from Mattress Clarity. It is not very bouncy, and Bear charges extra for the Celliant cover. One thing to watch: Bear redesigned it for 2026 as a 13-inch bed, and many older reviews tested the 10-inch version, so treat tester numbers as a guide rather than gospel.

It is too firm for many side sleepers and not built for people over 250 lb. At about $1,299 for a queen, though, it is the cheapest firm hybrid with coils in our database.

7/10 · Firm — Testers 6.5–8; most say firm.

The Bear Original is firm by every account we hold: Sleep Foundation and Sleepopolis both rated it 7, and testers overall ranged 6.5 to 8, with most calling it firm — and firmer than Bear’s label. Its support sub-score of 7.2 beats several beds that cost twice as much, and Sleep Foundation ranks it its number-two cheap mattress.

It is an all-foam gel memory foam bed, and that brings the usual foam trade-offs. Sleep Foundation scored temperature control only 6 out of 10, edges are weak, and pressure relief (6.0) is limited — fine for stomach and back sleepers, a problem for side sleepers. It isn’t designed for people over 230 lb.

7/10 · Firm — Saatva rates it Medium Firm (5–7) for sleepers over 300 lb and says those under 300 lb ‘might find it firmer’; average-weight testers measured 7–8.

The Saatva HD exists for one group: sleepers from 300 to 500 lb. It is rated to 500 lb per side, uses heavy-gauge coils and zoned natural latex, and has the highest support sub-score among our picks (8.3). TechRadar named it its best premium mattress for heavy people.

Expert scores are strong — Sleep Foundation 9.2 with pressure relief and durability of 8.5 each, Sleepopolis 4.7 out of 5 and a measured 7 out of 10 for firmness. To an average-weight tester it feels firm; Mattress Clarity’s testers put it at 8. Under a heavier body it lands closer to medium-firm, which is exactly what the evidence recommends.

It costs about $3,094 plus the recommended HD foundation, motion isolation is below average (6.0) and the $99 return fee applies. If you weigh under 230 lb, it will simply be too firm.

7/10 · Firm — RTINGS measured Firm (69 Pa/mm) on the 10″ Original Green Tea, not this 12″; Tom’s Guide found it soft — results conflict.

On paper the Zinus Green Tea is the firmest bed in our database: RTINGS measured 69 Pa/mm and called it a budget bed for back and stomach sleepers, too firm for most side sleepers. It isolates motion well (8.2) and costs about $295 for a queen.

We rank it last because the evidence is mixed. Tom’s Guide found it soft — a direct conflict with RTINGS — and NapLab placed it in the bottom 2% of 350 mattresses it tested. Sleep Foundation flagged durability and edge support for heavier sleepers, and Zinus faced a fiberglass lawsuit in 2022. It is a reasonable guest-room or first-apartment bed for a lighter back or stomach sleeper; it isn’t a long-term firm mattress. See our Amazon mattress guide for alternatives.

Extra firm mattress: do you really need one?

You will notice that no bed on this page is labeled extra firm. That is deliberate. On RTINGS’ lab scale, the firmest category is simply “firm”, and the firmest bed we hold measured 69 Pa/mm. On tester scales, the firmest options here — the Saatva Classic Firm and the Bear Elite Firm — sit around 8 out of 10. Mattress Clarity defines its firm band as 7.5 to 10 and doesn’t separately define extra firm.

In Mattress Clarity’s table, only one group is pointed at the very top of the scale: stomach sleepers over 230 lb, whose range runs from 8 to 10. For almost everyone else, a mattress rated 9 or 10 is harder than any recommended range, and the Kovacs trial’s H 2.3 beds — the group that did worse — were already near the hard end of the H-scale.

If you weigh over 230 lb and sleep on your stomach, the Saatva HD or the Saatva Latex Hybrid will give you the firmness you need with the durability to keep it. If you are lighter and want an extra firm feel because you like sleeping “on” the bed rather than “in” it, try the Saatva Classic Firm first. It has a quilted Euro top, so you get a firm feel without lying on a slab.

Is your mattress too firm? Warning signs

A good firm mattress keeps your spine level without pushing back hard on any one point. A too-firm mattress fails on the second half. The Hong lab study shows what that looks like: on the hard foam, contact pressure at the shoulder blades and buttocks was roughly three to four times higher than on the medium foam.

In practice, these are the signs that you have gone too far:

  • Numbness or pins and needles in an arm, shoulder or hip when you wake. Concentrated pressure compresses tissue; this is the classic side-sleeper complaint on firm beds.
  • Sore pressure points that fade quickly once you are up. Pain from a bad mattress usually eases within an hour or so; pain that lasts all day points to something else.
  • A gap under your lower back. Lie on your back and slide a hand under your waist. If it slips through easily, the bed isn’t meeting the curve of your spine.
  • Restless nights. Frequent turning is often your body relieving pressure. If you sleep noticeably better on a softer hotel or guest bed, take the hint.
  • You are under 130 lb. Mattress Clarity’s ranges for lighter sleepers top out at 7.5 even for stomach sleepers. Lighter bodies don’t sink enough to engage a firm comfort layer.

Before you return a bed, give it time. Mattress Clarity notes that memory foam feels firmer in a cold room and softer in a warm one, and most new beds soften a little over the first few weeks. One Nectar UK owner on Trustpilot said their bed “felt a bit too firm for first couple of nights” before settling in. If the signs persist after three to four weeks, a 2-to-3-inch soft topper is the cheapest fix; returning the bed within its trial is the cleanest one. Our mattress topper guide covers the options.

How to make a mattress firmer

The opposite problem — a bed that feels too soft — is more common, because mattresses soften as they age. Before you replace one, try these, roughly in order of cost. Mattress Clarity’s firmness tips cover most of them.

  • Check the base first. A worn box spring or slats spaced too far apart let the whole mattress dip. Replacing the foundation costs far less than a new bed.
  • Add a plywood board. A sheet of plywood cut to size and laid between the mattress and the base gives a firm, even platform. Mattress Clarity says this “could make your mattress feel a whole lot firmer and more supportive.” Keep air flowing underneath to avoid mould.
  • Add a firm topper. Dense latex or high-density foam adds push-back on the surface. Mattress Clarity says toppers can be “particularly helpful for stomach sleepers” who aren’t ready to buy a new bed. Our best mattress topper guide ranks the firm options; avoid soft memory foam, which does the opposite.
  • Flip or rotate it. If the bed is flippable, flip it; if not, rotate it head to foot so your hips land on less-worn foam.
  • Cool the room. Memory foam stiffens when it is cold, so a cooler bedroom genuinely makes a foam bed feel firmer.

None of these fixes a visible dip. If you can see a body impression where your hips lie, the support core has failed, and a topper or board will simply follow the sag. Sleep Foundation’s typical lifespan for a mattress is about six to eight years; if yours is older and sagging, buy a new one. Our best time to buy a mattress guide shows when firm beds like these are most heavily discounted.

Best firm mattress UK

None of our US picks except Nectar sell in the UK, and Nectar’s UK range is different from its US one. British shoppers searching for the best firm mattress in the UK should start with two beds from our best mattress UK guide.

The Panda Hybrid Bamboo is the firmest-feeling boxed bed we cover in the UK, at about 7 to 7.5 out of 10 despite a medium-firm label. Expert Reviews gave it a Best Buy and reported the least sinkage it had measured, which is what stomach sleepers and heavier back sleepers want. The Hypnos Luxury Firm 2 is a traditional British pocket-sprung bed with natural fillings, sold simply as Firm. It is a Furniture Village exclusive priced in store, with a 10-year guarantee — see our Hypnos review.

The same warning applies there as here. The UK market has a long tradition of “orthopaedic” beds, which usually just means firm, and the Kovacs trial is the reason that tradition doesn’t hold up for most people with back pain. Buy firm for your position and weight, not for the label.

Beds sold as firm that measured softer

These are good mattresses, just not firm ones. If firm is what you want, skip them:

  • DreamCloud Classic Hybrid — DreamCloud now labels it firm, but RTINGS measured it medium-plush at 39 Pa/mm, and Tom’s Guide found it a little soft for stomach sleepers. A great-value bed for side and combination sleepers; read our DreamCloud Classic Hybrid review.
  • Nectar Premier Hybrid — Sleep Foundation called it firm (7), but RTINGS measured it medium at 45 Pa/mm.
  • Nectar Classic Hybrid — Sleep Foundation rated it firm (7); RTINGS measured medium-firm at 56 Pa/mm. Close, and a good budget back-sleeper bed, but not truly firm.
  • Puffy Royal Hybrid — testers rated it as soft as 4, yet RTINGS measured medium-firm at 58 Pa/mm. With results this inconsistent, it is not a safe firm buy.
  • Saatva Classic in Luxury Firm — “firm” is in the name, but it is the medium-firm version. Order the Firm option instead.

The lesson is the same one this page started with: trust a lab measurement or a consensus of independent testers over the word on the label. For the full picture across every firmness, see our best mattress rankings or take the 30-second mattress finder.

Firm mattress FAQ

What is the best firm mattress?

The Saatva Latex Hybrid for most people. RTINGS measured it firm (60 Pa/mm) and gave it the best longevity score we track (8.3). For less money, the Bear Pro Hybrid (about $1,299) or the Bear Original (about $699) are both rated firm (7) by Sleep Foundation.

Is a firm mattress better for your back?

Not for most people. In the best trial, Kovacs 2003 in The Lancet, 313 adults with chronic low-back pain did better on a medium-firm mattress than a firm one after 90 days. Firm makes more sense for stomach sleepers and people over about 230 lb.

Is firm or medium-firm better?

Medium-firm is the better default and the one the research supports. Choose firm if you sleep on your stomach, if you are a heavier back sleeper, or if you have tried medium-firm and sank too far.

Who should sleep on a firm mattress?

Stomach sleepers of average or heavier weight, and back sleepers over about 130 lb who like a flat feel. Mattress Clarity’s ranges put average-weight stomach sleepers at 7 to 8 and heavier ones at 8 to 10. Side sleepers should avoid firm beds.

How do I know if my mattress is too firm?

Numb or tingling arms, shoulders or hips on waking, sore pressure points that fade after you get up, a gap under your lower back, and restless nights are the usual signs. Give a new bed three to four weeks, then add a soft topper or use the trial.

How can I make my mattress firmer?

Check that the base isn’t sagging, put a plywood board between the mattress and the base, add a firm latex or high-density foam topper, rotate or flip the bed, and keep the room cool if it is memory foam. None of these fixes a visible dip — that means it is time to replace it.

Is an extra firm mattress good for heavy people?

Only for heavier stomach sleepers, whose recommended range runs from 8 to 10. Most heavier sleepers do better with a firm coil or latex bed built for their weight, such as the Saatva HD (rated to 500 lb per side) or the Saatva Latex Hybrid.
