The short verdict
The best mattress on Amazon for most people on a tight budget is the Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam (12″). It costs about $295 for a queen, RTINGS measured strong motion isolation (8.2) and surprisingly decent cooling (7.5), and it suits back and stomach sleepers who like a firm bed. It is also the most-reviewed mattress on Amazon, with a third-party snapshot showing around 4.5 stars from roughly 100,000 ratings.
But we want to be straight with you. A $300 foam mattress is a $300 foam mattress. NapLab placed the Zinus Green Tea in the bottom 2% of 350 mattresses it tested and doesn’t recommend it. Sleep Foundation says edge support and durability fall short for heavier sleepers. And when you buy on Amazon, the brand’s own trial usually doesn’t apply. For a guest room, a kid’s room or a first apartment, these beds are fine. For two adults sleeping on it every night for years, spending about $650–$700 on a Nectar Classic or a DreamCloud Classic Hybrid is the better economy.

Zinus Green Tea — better than many pricier beds
Our ranking: Zinus Green Tea for back and stomach sleepers and spare rooms; Siena Memory Foam for side and combination sleepers who want a softer, Nectar-style feel for under $400; and the Linenspa 10″ Hybrid only for guest rooms, kids and dorms, where its $229 price matters more than its thin comfort layer.
Our Amazon mattress picks at a glance
Three mattresses on Amazon have enough independent testing behind them for us to rate with confidence. Here’s who each one suits:
Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam (12″)
Memory foam · Firm · $295
Pick it if you sleep on your back or stomach, like firm, and need it cheap.
Siena Memory Foam
Memory foam · Medium-firm · $329
Pick it if you want a medium-firm foam feel with more give for side sleeping.
Linenspa 10″ Hybrid
Hybrid · Medium · $229
Pick it if it’s for a guest room or a kid and you want coils for the least money.
And the decision shortcut, including the two cases where we’d tell you not to buy on Amazon at all:
If you…
Back or stomach sleeper on $300
If you…
Side sleeper under $400
If you…
Guest room or kids’ bed
If you…
Light sleeper sharing a bed
If you…
Two adults, nightly, for years
If you…
Over 230 lb or hot sleeper
What the lab data and experts say
We don’t test mattresses ourselves, and we don’t rate a mattress just because it has a lot of Amazon stars. For each pick we gathered measured results from RTINGS (which tested the 2025 Zinus Green Tea), scored reviews from Sleep Foundation, Sleepopolis, Tom’s Guide and NapLab, and owner ratings where we could find them. Our How we rate page explains the formula.

† Owner rating from the brand’s own site only — treat it as a ceiling. Brand-level Trustpilot scores are shown on each brand review.
Two notes on that table. The Siena has no owner rating we could verify, so its “Owners” figure is our neutral default rather than a real score. And the Linenspa’s owner rating comes from a closely related model on Walmart, used as a proxy. Treat both owner columns as rough.
The pattern is clear. On value, all three Amazon beds score 8 or 9 out of 10 — they are very cheap for what they do. Where they fall behind is comfort and structure: edge support runs 5.0 to 5.5 and pressure relief 6.1 to 6.8. The step-up beds beat them on pressure relief and edges (the DreamCloud measures 9.0), and still rate 9 or higher for value at around $650–$700. One surprise: the step-ups don’t win on estimated durability — the Zinus (6.7) actually rates above the Nectar Classic (5.7) and DreamCloud (5.5). So the case for spending more rests on comfort, support, a year-long trial and a longer warranty, not on lab longevity.
Firmness × price map
Find your feel first, then your budget. Dot size = Research Score.
The firmness map shows a useful split: the Zinus sits firmest, the Siena in the middle and the Linenspa softest. If you’re a side sleeper, the Zinus is probably the wrong Amazon mattress, whatever its star count says.
Expert consensus: guides that award each mattress
Counted from the independent outlets cited in each review (RTINGS, Sleep Foundation, Tom’s Guide, Forbes Vetted, TechRadar, Mattress Clarity, etc.).
On expert consensus, only the Siena holds a category placement among the Amazon picks — Tom’s Guide lists it among its best cheap mattresses for 2026. The Zinus has no award in the outlets we track, despite its sales. That gap between popularity and expert endorsement is the theme of this whole page.
#1 · Best Amazon mattress overall
Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam (12″)
Amazon’s most-reviewed mattress: firm, cheap, fine for back sleepers and spare rooms.
Performance (0–10)
7/10 · Firm — RTINGS measured Firm (69 Pa/mm) on the 10″ Original Green Tea, not this 12″; Tom’s Guide found it soft — results conflict.
The Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam is the mattress most people mean when they search for a Zinus mattress or an Amazon mattress. The 12″ version is the one we rate, and at about $295 for a queen it’s remarkably cheap for a full-thickness foam bed. RTINGS tested the 10″ Original Green Tea (2025 version), not the 12″, and measured it as Firm (69 Pa/mm), with good support (7.4), strong motion isolation (8.2) and better cooling than you’d expect from all-foam (7.5). RTINGS concludes it’s best for back and stomach sleepers on a budget and too firm for most side sleepers — if you want firmer, better-supported options at higher prices, see our best mattress for back sleepers guide.
That firmness verdict isn’t universal. Tom’s Guide found it soft and suggested it for side sleepers — the opposite of RTINGS. The most likely explanations are product revisions over time and different tester body weights, but the practical takeaway is that you can’t be sure which feel you’ll get. That makes the return policy matter more than usual.
The criticism is just as important. Sleep Foundation scored it 7.0 and says edge support and durability are lacking for heavier sleepers. NapLab was harsher, scoring it 6.9 and placing it in the bottom 2% of 350 mattresses it tested; it doesn’t recommend it. Owners commonly mention off-gassing when it’s unboxed, and there is the 2022 fiberglass lawsuit, which we cover below.
Our verdict: for a guest room, a teenager’s bed, or a back or stomach sleeper under about 230 lb who needs a mattress now for under $300, the Zinus Green Tea is the best-tested option on Amazon. For a couple’s main bed, it’s a short-term solution, and we’d rather you saved for one of the step-up beds.

#2 · Best Amazon mattress for side sleepers
Siena Memory Foam
Nectar’s sister brand: a $350-ish medium-firm foam bed with a 180-night trial if bought direct.
Performance (0–10)
6/10 · Medium-firm — Medium-firm (Sleep Foundation 6).
The Siena Memory Foam is the budget sister brand of Nectar, and it shows: it’s a 10″ medium-firm foam bed from the same parent as Nectar, at roughly half the price of a Nectar Classic — $329 for the 10-inch Signature queen direct from Siena on 27 October 2026, against a $742 “Total Value” anchor. Prices start at $179 for the smallest size, the 12-inch Signature costs $50 more, and earlier in October we saw $299 for a full and $399 for a king. Tom’s Guide lists it among its best cheap mattresses for 2026, quoting roughly $359–$399 for a queen at the time. Sleep Foundation scored it 7.3 and measured it at medium-firm (6), praising its motion isolation and pressure relief. Sleepopolis rated it 4 out of 5.
Compared with the Zinus, the Siena gives more. Its pressure relief score (6.8) beats the Zinus (6.1), which makes it the better Amazon pick for side sleepers and combination sleepers who want their shoulders to sink in a little. Motion isolation is good (7.5), and our durability estimate (6.0) is reasonable for the price.
The weak spots are typical of cheap foam. Edge support is the poorest of our picks (5.0), so sitting on the side of the bed feels unstable. It holds heat (cooling 5.8). And it’s not built for people over about 230 lb.
The biggest consideration is where you buy it. Bought direct from Siena, you get a 180-night trial and a 10-year warranty that Siena says covers free repair or replacement (“covered until 2036” for a bed bought now), shipping within one to three days, and a “30-Day Price Match Guarantee” shown as a banner on its site — we couldn’t see the terms, so ask Siena to confirm them in writing. Siena also says the foam is CertiPUR-US certified and the bed is fiberglass-free, and its page shows 3,681 reviews. Bought on Amazon, you may be limited to Amazon’s return window, which is much shorter. If you’re unsure whether medium-firm suits you, buying direct is the safer choice — and if you can stretch to about $699, the full Nectar Classic adds a 365-night trial and better motion isolation (8.4).
Our verdict: the Siena is the Amazon mattress we’d pick for a lighter side or combination sleeper, a teenager’s room or a first apartment. It gives a little more cushioning than the Zinus for only about $35 more, and its sister brand Nectar’s customer-service record — 1.4 stars on Trustpilot — is worth knowing before you count on a warranty claim.

#3 · Best for guest rooms & kids
Linenspa 10″ Hybrid
The cheapest coil hybrid worth considering — for guest rooms, not nightly couples.
Performance (0–10)
5.5/10 · Medium — Medium.
The Linenspa 10″ Hybrid is the cheapest coil mattress we think is worth considering, at about $229 for a queen. It puts a thin layer of foam over innerspring coils, which gives it some bounce and airflow that all-foam beds at this price lack. Tom’s Guide recommends getting the 10″ rather than the 8″ and calls it a good guest-room bed. Sleep Foundation scored it 7.3, rating pressure relief 7 and edge support 6, and noted the very low price and short trial.
It is the softest of our Amazon picks (medium, about 5.5), with mid-range scores for pressure relief (6.2) and cooling (6.5). But it is the weakest on the things that matter for nightly use. Motion isolation is just 5.5, so a partner’s movement carries across the bed. Support is only 6.0. And our durability estimate is 4.5 — the comfort layer is thin, and many owners say they can feel the coils.
The trial is the other drawback: Linenspa offers just 30 nights, and if you buy on Amazon, Amazon’s return policy applies. The owner rating we show comes from a closely related Linenspa model sold at Walmart (4.1 stars from about 9,500 reviews), so read it as a rough guide rather than a precise score.
Who should buy it: anyone furnishing a guest room that gets used a few nights a year, a child’s bed, a dorm or a short-term rental. Who shouldn’t: heavier sleepers, side sleepers with shoulder pain, and anyone planning to sleep on it every night for years. For that job, a $699 Nectar Classic or DreamCloud Classic Hybrid will cost less per year of good sleep.

Can you trust Amazon mattress ratings?
Amazon star ratings are the first thing most shoppers look at, and they’re the least useful number on this page. A few reasons. First, the ratings we cite come from third-party snapshots, not a live feed, so the number on the listing today may differ — always check the live page. Second, star ratings on cheap mattresses are mostly written in the first few weeks, before durability problems appear. Third, listings often group several sizes or versions, so a single star count may cover different products.
That’s why the Zinus Green Tea can have around 4.5 stars from roughly 100,000 ratings and still be ranked near the bottom of NapLab’s 350-mattress test. Both can be true: most buyers are happy at first, and the mattress still performs poorly in controlled tests of support, pressure and longevity. We weight lab measurements and expert reviews well above marketplace stars for exactly this reason.
What owners praise
- Very low prices
- Fast Prime delivery
- Fine for guest rooms and kids
What owners complain about
- Durability for heavier sleepers
- Heat retention in all-foam models
- Firmness/thickness not as described
- Fiberglass fire barriers in some older models
The themes in owner reviews of cheap Amazon mattresses are remarkably consistent. The praise is about price, fast Prime delivery and suitability for guest rooms and kids. The complaints are about durability for heavier sleepers, heat in all-foam models, firmness or thickness not matching the description, and — for some older models — fiberglass fire barriers.
Zinus and the fiberglass question
You can’t write an honest Zinus mattress review without mentioning fiberglass. Many cheap foam mattresses have used fiberglass as a fire barrier inside the cover, and the complaints tend to start when a cover is removed or torn and the fibres get out. In 2022 Zinus faced a lawsuit over fiberglass in its mattresses. Zinus has reportedly since moved to rayon-based fire barriers.
What does that mean for you? Three practical rules. Don’t remove the cover of a budget foam mattress, even if it has a zip. Check the law label and listing for the fire-barrier material before you buy; if it says glass fibre or fiberglass, decide whether you’re comfortable with that. And use a mattress protector from day one, which protects the cover and the warranty.

What Amazon budget picks won’t tell you
- Amazon star ratings below come from third-party snapshots — verify on the live listing.
- Zinus faced a 2022 fiberglass lawsuit; it reportedly moved to rayon barriers since.
- Brand trial periods usually don’t apply to Amazon purchases.
This is the catch most “best Amazon mattress” lists skip. Brand trial periods — Zinus’ 100 nights, Siena’s 180 nights — usually apply only when you buy direct from the brand. Buy on Amazon and you are generally covered by Amazon’s return window instead, which is far shorter, and returning a mattress that’s been unboxed and expanded is not straightforward.
| Mattress | Brand trial | If bought on Amazon | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zinus Green Tea | 100 nights (direct from Zinus) | Amazon’s return window | 10 years |
| Siena Memory Foam | 180 nights (direct from Siena) | Amazon’s return window | 10 years |
| Linenspa 10″ Hybrid | 30 nights | Amazon’s return window | 10 years |
| Nectar Classic (step-up) | 365 nights | Buy direct to get it | Forever |
| DreamCloud Classic (step-up) | 365 nights | Buy direct to get it | Forever |
Warranties are less affected — Zinus and Siena both offer 10 years — but most mattress warranties expect a suitable base and a measurable indentation before they pay out. Keep your order details and photograph the mattress on its base when it arrives.
Our advice: if you’re confident about the firmness — for example, you’re a back sleeper buying the Zinus, or you’re furnishing a spare room — Amazon’s convenience and Prime delivery are hard to beat. If you’re not sure what firmness suits you, buy direct and get the full trial — or read our how to choose a mattress guide first.
Buying a mattress on Amazon: the return rules nobody reads
The single biggest difference between an Amazon mattress and the same mattress bought direct is what happens if you don’t like it. Tom’s Guide, which looked into Amazon’s policy, reports that Amazon’s Returns Center lists a 90-day window for mattresses, but that individual product pages show anything from 30 to 100 days — and that the rules split sharply depending on whether you’ve opened the box.
The return clock: how many days you really get
Bar length = days to change your mind. Amazon windows apply to items sold by Amazon; third-party sellers set their own.
Refund request window once unboxed
Return via Returns Center ‘Heavy-Bulk’
100-night trial
180-night home trial
365-night trial, direct
Still sealed? You’re in the easy case. According to Tom’s Guide, an unopened mattress can go back within 100 days of purchase: start a return in the Returns Center and choose the “Heavy-Bulk” option, or call customer service. Already unboxed? A compressed mattress can’t be squeezed back into its box, so Amazon generally offers a refund rather than a true return, and Tom’s Guide says you can only request it up to 30 days from purchase. What happens next varies: some shoppers report a freight pickup, others were asked to wrap and ship the mattress themselves, and some were told to keep it and donate or dispose of it. Tom’s Guide’s own summary is that it comes down to how the representative interprets the policy.
Sold by a third party? Then the seller’s policy applies, which can be longer or shorter. Check the “Warranty & Support” section of the listing, and if the brand runs its own trial, ask the manufacturer whether it honours that trial for Amazon orders before you buy.
Before you click “Buy Now”, run this short checklist:
- Check who it’s “Sold by”. Amazon or a third-party seller decides which return window you get.
- Read the listing’s return text, not just the stars. Note whether it says 30 or 100 days, and set a calendar reminder for day 25.
- Confirm the exact version. Zinus sells several “Green Tea” models in different heights; the 12″ is the one we rate here.
- Measure your frame and pick the right size — our mattress size guide has the dimensions, and the best king size mattress guide covers whether a cheap king is worth it.
- Time it. Amazon mattress prices move a lot around Prime Day and Black Friday; our best time to buy a mattress guide shows when discounts are deepest.
If you’re not confident about firmness, these rules are the strongest argument for buying direct, where Siena gives 180 nights and Zinus 100. If you are confident — say you’re a firm-loving stomach sleeper buying the Zinus — Amazon’s fast delivery is a fair trade for the shorter window.
Zinus mattress unboxing: compression, expansion and off-gassing
Every mattress on this page arrives vacuum-compressed and rolled into a box, which is how a full-size bed can ship with Prime delivery. For the Zinus Green Tea, Zinus’ own product page gives the numbers: the queen 10″ Original Green Tea ships in a box roughly 14.6″ × 14.6″ × 43.7″ and weighs about 53 lb (60 lb packaged). One adult can drag it to a bedroom, but two make unrolling much easier.

Net weight of the queen mattress; ~60 lb with packaging
Night 1
Zinus says it’s safe to sleep on the first night
≤ 72 hours
Time Zinus gives for full expansion to height
Once you cut the plastic, Zinus says the mattress expands to its original shape within 72 hours, and that it’s safe to sleep on from the first night. In practice that means the first night may feel firmer and slightly lower than the finished bed, so don’t judge the feel — or start a return — on night one. A warm room helps the foam recover faster than a cold one.
Off-gassing is the other thing owners mention. Fresh polyurethane and memory foam release a chemical smell when unpacked, and it is one of the recurring comments in owner reviews of the Zinus. Zinus says its foams are CertiPUR-US certified, which means they’re made without certain flame retardants, phthalates and formaldehyde, but certification doesn’t mean odour-free. The practical fix is simple: unbox it in a room you can ventilate, leave windows open for the first day or two if you can, and put the sheets and protector on after the smell has faded. Current Zinus.com listings for the Green Tea line also describe the mattresses as fiberglass-free, which is worth checking on the law label of whichever version you receive given the history above.
One more tip if you’re a side sleeper and the Zinus turns out too firm once it has fully expanded: a 2–3″ foam topper is usually a cheaper fix than a return. Our best mattress topper guide covers options beyond the Lucid topper mentioned below.
When to spend more than an Amazon mattress
The honest answer to “should I buy a mattress on Amazon?” is: it depends on how many nights the mattress will work. Divide the price by the years you’ll use it, and the cheapest bed is not always the cheapest option.
The price ladder: queen price vs Research Score
Amazon picks in sky blue, direct-to-consumer step-ups in mint. From the cheapest bed to the best step-up, the score climbs 1.4 points.
Going from about $300 to about $650–$700 buys better pressure relief and edges, a 365-night trial instead of a short return window, and a Forever warranty instead of 10 years. It doesn’t buy better measured longevity — the Zinus actually rates higher there — which is exactly why the trial and warranty matter. That’s the jump we’d make for any adult sleeping on the mattress every night.
Step-up foam bed
Nectar Classic Memory Foam
Medium-firm memory foam with motion isolation of 8.4 — the best for couples at this price. 365 nights, Forever warranty.
Step-up hybrid
DreamCloud Classic Hybrid
Coils, edge support 9.0 and cooling 7.9 for about $699. Our pick for heavier and hotter sleepers on a budget.
Spend more if any of these apply: two adults sleep on it nightly; anyone weighs over about 230 lb (Sleep Foundation flags the Zinus’ edges and durability for heavier sleepers); you sleep hot; you have back or hip pain; or you want warranty and trial protection that lasts longer than a few weeks. For everything else — guest rooms, kids, short-term living — an Amazon mattress is perfectly sensible. Our best budget mattress guide covers more options under $700, and the best mattress for heavy people guide explains why cheap foam struggles under heavier bodies.
Amazon mattress toppers and air mattresses
Two other things people buy on Amazon instead of — or alongside — a cheap mattress: toppers and air beds. We haven’t built full scored reviews for these, so this section relies on independent reviews we read and cite below. Treat it as a starting point.
Toppers. A topper can soften a mattress that’s too firm, which makes it a useful fix for a side sleeper who bought a Zinus Green Tea. Sleepopolis rated the Lucid 3″ gel memory foam topper 4.4 out of 5, concluding “it is effective at cushioning pressure points for side sleepers.” In its testing the topper took a medium-firm mattress down to about 5 out of 10. It’s sold in 2″, 3″ and 4″ thicknesses, with a pre-discount queen price around $100. Sleepopolis cautions that it has no straps, so it can shift, and that it isn’t ideal for stomach sleepers or people over 250 lb, who may sink through it.
For context, the premium toppers that score highest in testing start around $300 for a queen — AARP’s top picks, from Saatva and Nectar, were $305 and $306. That’s more than a whole Zinus mattress. And a topper won’t fix a mattress that’s sagging: if your bed has a dip, a topper simply follows it.
Air mattresses. For occasional guests, an air bed can replace a spare-room mattress entirely. Mattress Clarity’s October 2026 guide names the Intex Dura-Beam Hi-Rise its best-value air mattress (4.4 out of 5): 22″ tall with a built-in pump, praised for durability, though it comes in one firmness. For camping it prefers the SoundAsleep Camping Series (4.0), which uses an external rechargeable pump. NBC Select’s guide names the SoundAsleep Dream Series its best overall pick, with a built-in plug-in pump and a flocked top.

Search Amazon ↗Our take: an air mattress is the right call for a room that hosts guests a handful of nights a year. If it’s more than that, the Linenspa or Zinus becomes better value. And if the problem is a mattress that’s too firm rather than one that’s worn out, try a topper before replacing the whole bed.
Amazon mattress FAQ
What is the best mattress on Amazon?
For most budget shoppers, the Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam (12-inch) at about $295 for a queen — RTINGS measured strong motion isolation (8.2) and good support for back and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers should consider the Siena Memory Foam instead, and guest rooms the Linenspa 10-inch Hybrid.
Is the Zinus Green Tea mattress any good?
It is good for the price, with caveats. RTINGS found it firm and well suited to back and stomach sleepers, but Sleep Foundation flags weak edges and durability for heavier sleepers, and NapLab ranked it in the bottom 2% of 350 mattresses tested. It’s best for guest rooms, kids and short-term use.
Do Zinus mattresses have fiberglass?
Zinus faced a lawsuit over fiberglass in 2022 and has reportedly moved to rayon fire barriers since. Check the law label and listing of the exact model you buy, never remove the cover, and use a mattress protector.
Does the mattress trial apply if I buy on Amazon?
Usually not. Brand trials such as Zinus’ 100 nights and Siena’s 180 nights generally apply only to direct purchases. On Amazon, Amazon’s own, much shorter return window typically applies, so buy direct if you’re unsure about firmness.
Are Amazon mattresses as good as Nectar or DreamCloud?
Not for nightly use by adults. The Nectar Classic and DreamCloud Classic Hybrid (both ~$699) beat the Amazon picks on pressure relief and edge support, and include a 365-night trial and Forever warranty. The Amazon beds win on upfront price, and the Zinus even rates higher on estimated durability.
Can you return a mattress to Amazon after opening it?
Usually only as a refund request, and only for a short time. Tom’s Guide reports Amazon allows refund requests on an opened mattress up to 30 days from purchase, versus 100 days for an unopened one. Third-party sellers set their own terms, so check the listing.
How long does a Zinus mattress take to expand?
Zinus says its Green Tea mattresses expand to full shape within 72 hours and are safe to sleep on the first night. Unbox it in a ventilated room to help any new-foam smell clear.
How long does a cheap Amazon mattress last?
Expect less than a mid-range mattress, especially for heavier sleepers. Our durability estimates range from 4.5 (Linenspa) to 6.7 (Zinus) out of 10, and durability is the most common complaint in owner reviews.
Is a mattress topper a good alternative to a new mattress?
Only if your mattress is too firm rather than worn out. A topper like the Lucid 3-inch gel topper (Sleepopolis 4.4/5) can soften a firm bed for side sleepers, but it won’t fix sagging — it just follows the dip.
